Training
Hilary has an Advanced Diploma in Integrative Counselling and Therapy. She is an Accredited Member of the BACP (British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy) and has worked in private practice since 2012.
Hilary has trained in EMDR Therapy. This stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. EMDR is particularly effective for reprocessing traumatic memories and is a recognised treatment for PTSD by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), and recommended by The World Health Organisation (WHO).
Experience
Hilary keeps up to date with her knowledge and skills by attending regular professional development training. Being an Accredited member of the BACP she abides by their ethical framework to ensure her work is of the highest standard.
Hilary's original training was as an integrative therapist, allowing her to provide the therapy that suits the person she is working with. Research tells us that it is the relationship between therapist and client that is the single most important element in determining the outcome of the therapy. Listening to you, building a therapeutic relationship and working out what you want and need from therapy is at the heart of how she works.
Trauma Therapy (EMDR)
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, it is a unique and powerful form of therapy that has helped millions of people overcome a wide range of emotional and psychological issues.
EMDR is based on the idea that the brain has a natural ability to heal itself, and the therapy works by reprocessing traumatic memories so that they no longer have a negative impact on our lives. It can accelerate therapy by resolving the impact of past traumas and allowing you to live more fully in the present. During treatment you will remain in control, fully alert and wide awake.
Reprocessing is usually experienced as something that happens spontaneously, and new connections and insights are felt to arise quite naturally from within. As a result most people experience EMDR as being a natural and very empowering therapy.
Anxiety and Depression
Anxiety and depression are two very common problems to present in therapy. They can be experienced separately and it is also possible to have them together. Hilary will look at what your symptoms are and in a non-judgemental way work with you to find a way forward that is right for you. This may include looking at your past and at what is happening in your life now. It also may involve changing behaviours that are causing problems and working out new ways that are more helpful. This is all about increasing self awareness of how life style choices maybe impacting on emotional wellbeing.
Bereavement and Loss
Hilary has worked with bereavement and loss for many years. After a bereavement or loss, counselling can help you to process your loss, and understand your thoughts and emotions. There are a range of different responses to loss and seeing a therapist can give you a place and space to process this loss. A place to focus on your bereavement process and to find ways to manage it, whether this loss is recent or years previously.
Loss does not only occur when a person dies, it can be when a relationship ends or people you care about move away. There is no right or wrong way to grieve, but it’s important to remember that the process can take time, as healing happens gradually.
Other information
Hilary offers both short term or more open ended therapy, with plenty of reviews in a safe and confidential setting in a ground floor room in Hove.
