Approach
Therapy can be a great resource to help you work through difficult times - providing a supportive relationship for you to talk through the challenges you face. Oli’s style of therapy is active and engaged. He provides a welcoming space for you to tell your story, explore and be listened to. Oli also sees therapy as a process to bring about change and find new perspectives. With that in mind, Oli will also look to challenge you where appropriate.
Oli works in a relational way, which means that reflecting on relationship histories and patterns is central to the work. The relational approach can help to build a deeper awareness of how life experiences have shaped your personality, self-image and relationship styles.
Primarily, therapy is about working on what is most important to you. There might be a specific issue, such as anxiety, depression, bereavement, trauma, self-esteem or relationship struggles. Or you might just be feeling a general sense of dissatisfaction, and a desire to have a space to explore what’s most important to you. Oli works in a variety of ways - with individuals, couples, online, in person, short term and long term. Starting the process can be daunting, but can also come with the hope of improving your quality of life.
Couples & Relationships
Are you stuck in a pattern of repetitive arguments, without finding resolution? Perhaps you feel distant from your partner, and want to rediscover a lost connection? Do you want to strengthen your bond and improve your communication? Are you grappling with a significant incident or big change which has impacted your relationship?
Some couples come to therapy when they're going through a difficult period and things need to improve. Others start the process when the relationship is going pretty well, and the goal is to maintain and strengthen your bond.
In any situation, exploring your relationship openly in a safe environment can be the starting point for transformation. Developing your awareness of each other's complexity, as well as building on your own self-awareness, can support you to lead more fulfilling lives together. We can also work through any issues or resentments and build towards a more satisfying relationship for everyone.
Oli is trained in Transactional Analysis psychotherapy, an approach which is all about relationships. His approach is thoughtful and considerate, while challenging where appropriate. Oli works with people on improving their relationships in both couples and individual therapy.
Trauma
Traumatic experiences can have a huge impact on how we experience life and how we think and feel about ourselves. These difficult memories can have a lasting impact on our sense of wellbeing.
Oli can support you to work through traumatic experiences - whether from childhood, adulthood or in the form of traumatic incidents or challenging relationships. The simple act of talking things through in a supportive environment can bring some relief. Working through difficult experiences can also help to reduce the amount they impact you in the present.
There’s no rush when it comes to working with trauma - Oli works at whatever pace feels right for you.
Self-esteem
The way we view ourselves is such a vital part of our overall sense of well-being. An excessively negative view of the self can leave you feeling miserable and dissatisfied. Issues with self-esteem can also be limiting, potentially in our careers or relationships.
Oli supports people to understand the roots of these negative feelings and work towards a more balanced view. Sometimes this is about exploring your life history and building an awareness of where these views may have developed. Therapy can be like an investigation of the self - putting together the pieces of the puzzle from your past and developing your self-awareness. This can encourage flexibility in the way you think about yourself, create new perspectives on the self and lead to a boost in your self-esteem.
Undergoing change and transition isn’t easy, and early adult life throws a lot of these your way – from relationships, to bereavements, to becoming a parent. Learn coping strategies to manage transitions.
